A proper Health History is a medical-legal requirement. What questions need to be asked? Is an interview required? The elements of a health history will be reviewed with a sample history and interview sheet provided. We all manage patients on medications or those with heart, kidney or psychiatric problems. Some patients have infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis or hepatitis. All these patients and many more require proper management for safe dental treatment. Dental protocols for patients with common medical problems, will be discussed including correct prophylactic antibiotic use for hearts and prosthetic joints, diabetes, bleeding problems, immunosupression and other diseases. Most discussions of aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry focus on the shape, contour, and color of the teeth and their restorations. The aesthetic presentation is not complete without consideration of the surrounding tissues. This course begins with a short philosophical discussion of beauty and aesthetics. Dr. Leonard Abrams’ Aesthetic Examination is then presented in detail. Common aesthetic zone soft tissue problems- severe facial recession, deficient maxillary ridges, and the gummy smile or altered passive eruption (APE) are shown with potential surgical solutions. The Chu Aesthetic Gauge is also introduced to assist in treatment planning patients with APE.

This course begins with some comments about the current understanding of chronic inflammation related to the periodontal diseases. The concept of risk is defined and a risk assessment tool is presented. Various risk factors including why biofilm- bacterial plaque- is necessary but not sufficient to cause inflammatory periodontal disease, the transmission of pathogens, the role of calculus, tooth anatomy, restorative factors, systemic factors such as diabetes, obesity, HIV/AIDS, medications, genetics, smoking, and other factors may contribute to the progression of attachment loss are explored in detail. The course concludes with a section on the criteria needed to prove a causal relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The proper interpretation of odds ratios closes out the session.
