At the conclusion of this program attendees should understand: - The impact dental professionals have on patient health beyond the oral cavity. - The mechanism of periodontal disease development and the immuno-inflammatory response. - Risk assessment to maximize clinical outcomes - Oral/systemic research findings and their relevance to clinical practice. Course Outline 1- The science of periodontal disease: Detailed discussion of; biofilm, perio pathogens, bacterial alteration of microenvironment and survival strategies bacterial invasion of gingival epithelium, infection, inflammatory response, bacteremia, immune system and the mechanism of periodontal tissue destruction. 2- Risk assessment: Understanding the primary role of risk factor reduction. 3- C-reactive protein: CRP and cardiovascular events, coronary heart disease, blood levels, periodontal disease and CRP. 4- Oral/Systemic link update: Emerging research concerning oral/systemic links. 5- Medical manifestations of periodontal disease: Cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy events, diabetic complications, the mechanism of action of insulin, and the impact of periodontal disease on glycemic control. 6- Practice modifications: Incorporating research findings into daily practice to enhance patient care, Arestin utilization.

This presentation discusses the details of periodontal disease development including; biofilm, the mechanism of bacterial invasion of the gingiva and the immuno-inflammatory response. Additional topics include; risk assessment, C-reactive protein, cardiovascular diseases, diabetic complications, and adverse pregnancy events. The presentation concludes with a discussion of how to incorporate research findings into daily practice to enhance patient care.
