WNL means within normal limits but are we sure? Oral cancer is one of the most treatable of the major cancers when discovered and treated early. Yet oral cancer (6th most common cancer in the US) is the only major cancer whose incidence is rising when most other cancers are declining. Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to screen patients and detect oral cancer in its early, treatable stage. This course provides a review of the topic and practical recommendations for screening patients in the general practice setting.

This program will provide attendees with current facts and figures regarding oral cancer and all the benefits of a regular office program to help with early detection and thus saving lives. Oral cancer kills one North American every hour of every day. Surprisingly, many victims are now developing the disease not due to tobacco and alcohol use, and 25% of new oral cancer is found in patients who do not fit the profile we expect. With a proper oral exam and the use of new technology, dentists have an opportunity to change the survival rate from 50% to 90% or more with early detection. This program will also look at many useful technologies available today to make our practices more fun, and more profitable.

The objectives of this course are too first enlighten the viewer as too the latest information and statistics regarding oral cancer. With this as a basis, it becomes essential to understand the role of a thorough head neck exam that includes direct visualization, fluorescence screening, followed by brushing type biopsies if appropriate or actual biopsy procedures. Though there is no one uniform system currently to detect and screen for oral cancer presently, it is the intent of this course to outline an approach that can be implemented to the viewer’s office as an initial starting point.

With decades of the same morbidity, it is the responsibility of dentists and hygienists to implement oral cancer screening programs into their offices. Early diagnosis and screening for all of our patients has to become the standard of care within our profession. This course will give the viewer an overall understanding of Oral Cancer and along with new associated risk factors. It will include new approaches to screening, along with case examples of how to implement a time and cost effective system into their offices.
