It has been shown that there is a great deal of subjectivity and inconsistency when diagnosing periodontal disease. This is true whether one practitioner is working patient to patient, or when multiple clinicians are viewing one patient’s data. Traditionally, there has been a ‘two-dimensional’ approach to diagnosing based on clinical conditions and patient medical history. However, in order to optimally treat disease, it is important that a ‘third dimension’ be added to the picture—that of risk. Even when one understands the concept of risk, there have always been challenges in accurately determining it, but doing so in a way that is practical in a private practice setting. This program discusses what risk is, how to determine it, how it is distinct from current disease state, and how knowing both allows for proper treatment planning and dramatically improves quality of patient care. We explore how technology now allows a simple, objective, and reproducible way to do all this!
