Dr. Lorin Berland is an internationally acclaimed cosmetic dentist and one of the most published authorities in the dental and general media. He is a Fellow of the AACD, the co-creator of the Lorin Library Smile Style Guide, the developer of www.denturewearers.com, the creator of `Biomimetic Same Day Inlay/Onlays` an 8 AGD Credit CD ROM and the founder of Berland Dental Arts, a multi-doctor specialty practice in the Dallas Arts District that pioneered the concept of spa dentistry. His unique approach to dentistry has been featured on television and publications such as 20/20, Time, Town & Country, Reader`s Digest, GQ, US News and World Report, Woman`s World, Details, Dallas Morning News, Good Morning Texas, D magazine and more. He currently serves as the editor of the Cosmetic Dental Tribune.

This course covers the laws and rules governing the practice of dentistry in Florida. Specifically, the lecture discusses Chapters 456, and 466, of the Florida Statutes, as well as Chapter 64B5 of the Florida Administrative Code.Chapter 456, F.S. covers the general provisions applicable to all health professions and occupations. The course discusses common grounds for disciplinary action under Chapter 456, as well as lesser known provisions
that are important to dental professionals. Chapter 466, F.S. is the Dental Practice Act. The course covers the purpose of the Act, the creation of the Board of Dentistry, and grounds for disciplinary action.Chapter 64B5 of the Florida Administrative Code is covered in the most depth. This Chapter covers all the rules promulgated by the Board. The course covers these rules as they are applied to education, experience, and examination requirements, grounds for disciplinary proceedings and disciplinary guidelines, advertising and solicitation guidelines, license requirements, status, renewals, reactivation, and exemptions, continuing education requirements, and delegation of remediable tasks.The course goes on to discuss the disciplinary process in Florida. Each step is described, including filed complaints, the investigation stage, probable cause determination, litigation, board action, and appeal. Samples of common documents received in the disciplinary process are included.
Most importantly, the course covers the rights and obligations imposed on dental professionals during the investigatory and disciplinary process.Next, the course provides information on recent rule changes and newly enacted laws. One of the most important new laws passed during the 2009 legislative session was SB1986. It is covered in detail, along with its application to dental professionals.Lastly, the course lists 10 ways for dental professionals to avoid getting in trouble with the Board. These include such matters as verifying the credentials and licensure of dentists, hygienists, and assistants employed under a dental practitioners practice, ensuring accurate and timely renewal of the practitioner’s license, and maintain comprehensive documentation.
Ed worked in various capacities for the Florida Office of the Attorney General, including Tax Litigation, Administrative Law, Cabinet Affairs and Inspector General. Ed's primary area of practice while in government involved providing advice and representation to regulatory boards under the umbrella of the Department of Health and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. As Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Administrative Law Section, Ed served as counsel to various professional regulatory boards, including Pharmacy, Dentistry, Osteopathic Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Professional Engineers, Landscape Architecture, Clinical Social Work, and Harbor Pilots. In addition, Ed handled temporary duties or litigation for several other boards including Medicine, Psychology, Nursing, Architecture and Accountancy. In 2002, Ed served as the Attorney General Representative to the Pedigree Paper Task Force.
Ed's current practice at Metzger, Grossman, Furlow and Bayo' includes the representation of professional licensees, regulated entities and interested parties before regulatory agencies, Florida Courts and the Division of Administrative Hearings. He concentrates his practice in the areas of Administrative and Regulatory Law with emphasis on the laws and regulations affecting pharmacies, drug manufacturers and drug wholesalers. He is a frequent speaker before local, state, and national professional organizations on licensure and regulatory issues, and has published several articles on these topics.
